Yoga Before Or After Weights

Is it better to do yoga before or after weight loss?

Above all, keep in mind that you do not want to lengthen your muscles prior to any high-intensity workouts. Yoga also helps lengthen your muscles.

A meta-analysis of 104 studies on the acute effects of static stretching (SS) (hanging out in the stretch for a period of time) on strength, power, and explosive performance was conducted.

The data points indicated that static stretching had a negative impact on performance. Conclusion:

Using SS as the sole activity during the warm-up routine should be avoided in general.

Have you ever spent a long time stretching before a workout? Please stop doing that. It's something I see all the time. They are simply stretching their muscles prior to working out.

HOWEVER, Take note of the quote above, which states that static stretching should not be the only activity performed during a warm-up.

Interestingly, it appears in a study that combining SS with a dynamic warm-up routine eliminates SS's negative effects on muscle power.

As a result, I'm having to eat my words a little bit here. This must imply that doing yoga before lifting weights is acceptable. It is, after all, a very dynamic practice. Unless you practice yin or restorative yoga, it is unlikely that you will hold stretches for more than 45 seconds. Vinyasa yoga uses your breath to move you from position to position. Taking you through the "flow". That means you're not even doing static stretching!

OK... So there you have it. And one could argue that yoga would make an excellent warm-up routine. because there is a significant amount of dynamic stretching going on.

However, a warm-up is not meant to lengthen the muscles. And yoga allows you to lengthen your entire body. Furthermore, yoga promotes rest and recovery. That is NOT what you want before you work out!

Yoga can be a hard workout in and of itself.

In a yoga class, there is a significant amount of time spent under tension on the muscles! With all of the pushing and lunging that was going on, You'll frequently leave feeling exhausted. In fact, some people experience delayed onset muscle soreness after their first few yoga classes.

So the issue with doing yoga before weights here is that, depending on how intense it is, it can degrade the capacity for strength training.

You want to save that power for your high-intensity training! For squeezing and yanking weights!

What I like about doing yoga after weights is that it helps to strengthen the areas that your workout did not target. It's similar to rebar in concrete. That is, at least, how I like to think of it. Yoga truly strengthens your body in amazing ways.

And it works so well with it. Not only are you filling in the blanks with strength, but you're also testing your stability and balance.

Conclusion on yoga before or after weights

So that's my take on yoga before or after lifting weights.

It's difficult. But, in a nutshell, I would avoid doing any full-length yoga practices before lifting weights. According to research, stretching muscles before exercise has a negative impact on athletic performance. And yoga can cause more resistance in the muscles than you would like prior to strength-focused training.

However, if you used something like a few rounds of sun salutes, that would be perfectly fine. That would be a fantastic way to warm up!

You could even do yoga in the morning and lift later in the day (but I would again avoid excessively challenging practices).

Tailored yoga for your weightlifting routine

Yoga can be "adapted" to fit the lifestyle needs of a barbell slinger like yourself.

Because if you're going to lift heavy things, you should also be able to move and feel your best.

If you want to learn how to do yoga and take the best classes, you should:

  • In addition to your regular workouts, yoga can help you improve your flexibility and joint health.

  • Improve your recovery and mental focus by learning to breathe deeply.

  • Strengthen areas that aren't getting enough attention from weight training.

  • Improve your posture and alignment.

  • Improve your core strength and stability.

  • To reduce the risk of injury, iron out any imbalances.
