While there aren't many rules to follow when practicing yoga, there are a few things you should definitely avoid doing before starting a yoga routine, or you risk endangering your health. As the world prepares to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21st, 2017, read through the three top things you should avoid doing before doing yoga and get ready to join them on their mat.

1. Do not eat

While you may have heard that eating before doing yoga is not recommended, here's why it can actually be harmful to your health. Bending, stretching, and deep breathing are all part of yoga. It also necessitates that you channel all of your energy and thoughts into your inner core and spirit. After we eat, our bodies expend a lot of energy digesting the food, which can cause us to become drowsy. Doing yoga in this state will not provide you with any of the benefits of the asana because your effort will be insufficient. Furthermore, practicing yoga on an empty stomach can result in painful cramps, nausea, and even vomiting.

Do not take showers

Showering right before yoga is not advised for the same reasons that showering right after yoga is not advised. A hot shower draws blood from your body's glands and internal organs to the skin's surface. It also depletes the vital energy that was built up in your body during the yoga routine. As a result, it is critical that you wait at least 30 minutes after a yoga session before taking a bath. Similarly, it is not recommended that you take a bath at least 2 hours before a yoga session. Another reason to avoid taking a bath before yoga is to observe the effects of yoga on our bodies.

Certain yoga poses generate heat in the body, while others cool it down, resulting in beneficial changes. Taking a hot or cold water bath alters the temperature of the body, making it more difficult for the effects of yoga to be felt.

3. Do not consume coffee.

If you've ever had coffee to wake you up, you're aware that caffeine alters your body's internal balance. Caffeine causes a stress response in our bodies, such as increased heart rate and muscle tension. This will make it difficult for you to focus or meditate during your yoga routine, preventing you from achieving a positive outcome.

While our minds are constantly racing and clamoring for our attention, yoga is about calming your mind and directing your energy towards a specific goal. Avoid doing these things if you want to experience complete unity with your spirit while practicing yoga.
